Wall Mount vs Floor Standing Server Racks: Which Do You Need?

Compare wall-mounted and free-standing network racks to pick the right one.
July 15, 2026 by

One of the most common questions in network hardware is whether to buy a wall mount server rack or a floor standing server rack. Both mount 19-inch equipment, but they suit very different environments. Here is how to choose.

Wall mount server racks

Wall-mounted network racks (typically 4U to 18U) attach to a wall, saving valuable floor space. They are ideal for:

  • Small offices, retail and branch locations
  • CCTV/NVR and access-control hardware
  • Switches, patch panels and a small UPS

Look for a deep (600 mm) frame if you need to mount short-depth servers. Explore DAD LINK wall mount server racks.

Floor standing server racks

Floor-standing (free-standing) server racks (18U to 42U) rest on the floor and carry far more weight and depth. Choose them for:

  • Server rooms, main distribution frames (MDF) and data centers
  • Full-depth servers, storage arrays and multiple UPS units
  • High-density deployments needing structured cable management

Quick comparison

Capacity: wall mount 4U-18U vs floor standing 18U-42U. Load: wall racks are limited by wall strength; floor racks support hundreds of kilograms. Depth: wall 450-600 mm vs floor up to 1000 mm.

Which should you buy?

If you have fewer than 18U of equipment and limited floor space, choose a wall mount rack. If you run full-depth servers or expect to grow, invest in a floor standing rack. Not sure on size? See our server rack size guide.
