Pigtails
A fiber optic pigtail is a short fiber terminated with a factory-polished connector at one end and left as bare fiber at the other, so a splicing crew can fusion-splice it directly onto incoming cable. It is how raw fiber becomes a usable port. DAD LINK supplies pigtails throughout Iraq, from Erbil across the Kurdistan Region to Baghdad, in single mode OS2 and multimode OM1, OM2 and OM4, in both UPC and APC polish.

How to choose a pigtail
- Match the fiber grade to the cable being spliced. Splicing a 9/125 um single mode pigtail onto multimode cable, or a 50/125 um tail onto 62.5/125 um plant, introduces loss at the joint that no later work removes. Read the cable jacket before ordering.
- Choose the polish by application. UPC is the general-purpose polish for enterprise, campus and data centre plant. APC has an 8 degree angled endface that deflects reflected light out of the core, which is why PON, FTTH and RF-over-glass work specifies it. Never mate an APC connector to a UPC one.
- Count the cores, then the tails. One pigtail terminates one fiber. A 24 core ODF being fully populated needs 24 pigtails, plus spares for splice failures.
Pigtail range
| Pigtail | Fiber | Core | Polish | Wavelengths |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OS2 Pigtail APC | Single mode OS2 | 9/125 um | APC, 8 degree angled | 1310 / 1550 nm |
| OS2 Pigtail UPC | Single mode OS2 | 9/125 um | UPC | 1310 / 1550 nm |
| OM4 Pigtail UPC | Multimode OM4, laser-optimized | 50/125 um | UPC | 850 / 1300 nm |
| OM2 Pigtail UPC | Multimode OM2 | 50/125 um | UPC | 850 / 1300 nm |
| OM1 Pigtail UPC | Multimode OM1 | 62.5/125 um | UPC | 850 / 1300 nm |
Where pigtails are consumed in Iraq
Pigtails are a per-core consumable on every fiber build. On ISP last-mile work across Iraq the OS2 APC tail is the standard item, spliced inside FTTH distribution boxes at the building and inside DIN rail enclosures in street cabinets. On enterprise and government projects in Erbil and Baghdad the OS2 UPC and OM4 tails terminate riser and backbone cable inside a 19 inch ODF, where they mate through fiber adapters and are patched onward with fiber patch cords.
